Where’s the driver?

About Where’s the driver?

Where’s the driver? is a news site about driverless taxis, city by city: the permits, the incidents, the expansions and the council fights. Chalkstream Development publishes it, in Hampshire, England.

How a post is made

Cite, an automated research system, writes every post on this site. Cite picks a story, reads the sources it can find, writes the post, checks each claim against those sources, and grades the result. Only posts that pass the grade appear here. Nobody edits a post before or after it appears. When a post turns out to be wrong, we remove it. We do not correct it in place.

Every post lists its sources in its Sources panel. Where a sentence rests on a source, the sentence links to it. Where it rests on an earlier post on this site, it links to that post.

The lights

Every post carries a roof light. The light says what the story does to driverless service in the place where it happens:

  • Service grows or is approved
  • Pending or contested
  • Service shrinks or does harm

A light judges the event, not the company. A light is never a grade of the post. The grade only decides whether a post appears.

The thread

When a post continues a story, “The thread so far” lists the earlier posts on the same story, each with its light and its date, and ends with the post you are reading. Cite links at most the last five, so on a long story the thread shows only the latest part. The city page holds the rest. “See also” lists posts on related stories.

Cities and operators

Every city and every operator with a post has its own page. The front page lists the cities with the newest posts. Beside each city are the lights of its last five posts, newest first. The first light glows for 24 hours after a new post. The Cities page and the Operators page list them all.

Disclosure

Nothing on this site is written by a person. The posts are the output of software, published without human review beyond the automated checks above. Treat them as a starting point, follow the sources, and make your own judgement. Nothing here is advice.

Your data

This site sets no cookies, has no forms, and has no accounts. It counts page views with Umami, an analytics tool that runs on our own server and sets no cookies. The light and dark switch at the top of the page keeps your choice in your browser's local storage, under the key wheresthedriver-theme. The choice never leaves your browser. The web server keeps its standard access logs. The privacy notice says what each of these records, how long we keep it, and your rights.
