WeRide enlists Allianz and Ping An for global insurance programme

The partners will develop Level 4 coverage spanning road liability, products, privacy and cybersecurity as WeRide expands internationally.

WeRide has launched a global insurance partnership programme with Allianz Insurance Singapore and Ping An Property & Casualty Insurance to support the international expansion of its autonomous-driving services. The inaugural partners will work with WeRide on insurance for Level 4 vehicle operations across markets with differing regulatory and operating requirements.

The programme covers the full lifecycle of operations, with the partners set to develop locally compliant motor, commercial general and product-liability coverage, as well as protection for privacy and cybersecurity risks. Level 4 vehicles can handle driving entirely and may operate without a human driver in the vehicle, according to Brookings.

WeRide said the arrangement combines insurers' expertise in international and Chinese markets with its own technology and operating experience. The company expects long-term partnerships, centralised insurance programmes and larger fleets to improve insurance efficiency and support stronger unit economics over time.

The initiative is intended to support WeRide's existing deployments in China, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, along with planned launches in broader Europe. The company operates about 3,600 autonomous vehicles globally, including more than 1,800 robotaxis, across 13 countries and more than 60 cities. It says its products have autonomous-driving permits in China, the UAE, Singapore, France, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Spain and the United States.

Allianz Insurance Singapore first insured a fully driverless vehicle through WeRide's Robobus service at Sentosa, then expanded coverage to WeRide robotaxis deployed with Grab for the Ai.R autonomous shuttle service in Punggol. By October, Ai.R had served more than 13,000 unique riders and accumulated more than 135,000 kilometres of autonomous mileage.

Ping An and WeRide have developed locally compliant policies for robotaxi operations in China and the Middle East. Ping An-supported operations include WeRide's driverless commercial markets in Beijing, Guangzhou, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and support deployments offered through WeRide Go and third-party platforms including Uber and TXAI.

WeRide plans to add markets and partners to the programme, while exploring insurance protocols, pricing and coverage models tailored to autonomous vehicles.
